Proposed Service Modifications to go into effect May 17, 2010

Background

ValleyRide has had the same route structure and schedule since 2005. Our mid-range plan calls for more service, but assumed that public transit would have a dedicated funding source by the time the ridership developed enough to need it.

Preparing for a possible reduction in funding from the cities, a team of City of Boise planners and VRT planning and operations staff developed several different service scenarios. The team examined performance indicators on all routes and sections of routes. The goal of these modifications is to make the whole system more efficient and increase service where there is high demand while using the same budget.

 Future possible enhancements:

• Route 1 Parkcenter will be rerouted and will no longer run beyond Federal Way. This route will
no longer serve Commerce Ave., Development Ave., or the Boise Airport. The bus will no longer change into the Route 3 Vista at the Boise Airport.

The first outbound trip at 5:15 AM from downtown to Federal Way will be discontinued. The first trip in the morning will be 5:45 AM from Federal Way to downtown.

Route 2 Broadway will be rerouted through the Gekeler-Apple neighborhood. Buses will run north on Gekeler, east on Pennsylvania, and south on Apple to Bergeson. The routing and stops from Federal Way to the downtown transfer center will remain the same.

Service frequency on this route will change to every 60 minutes from 6:45 AM to 6:55 PM. Currently there is more frequent 30-minute service in the afternoon only. Due to lower ridership, this added service will be discontinued.

Performance on this route will be monitored for further adjustments, including more frequent service, within the next year.

Current service frequency is every 30 minutes during AM and PM commute times and 60
minutes midday. The proposed changes will increase the service frequency on this route to 20 minutes AM and PM peak time frequency and 40 minutes midday.

Route and stops will remain the same.

Current service on this route is every 30 minutes during AM and PM commute times and 60 minutes midday. The proposed changes will increase the frequency to 40 minutes between
5:45 AM to 6:45 PM.

Route and Stops will remain the same.

Route 8 will no longer serve Chinden Boulevard. Instead, to provide  more reliable service, this route will primarily serve the Towne Square Mall Park and Ride and Five Mile to Hewlett-Packard (HP). For more information about potential Garden City routes, please see below.

Option A would start and end at the Towne Square Mall Park and Ride. This route could have 30-minute morning and late afternoon frequency with 60-minutes midday. The routing and stops from the mall to HP would remain the same. A transfer would be required to get downtown from this route.

Option B would start and end downtown. It would serve as a direct, express connection between the Towne Square Mall Park and Ride and downtown Boise. The routing and stops from the mall to HP would remain the same. This route would have 40-minute peak AM and PM frequency and 80-minute service middday.

ValleyRide will begin offering limited express service during commute times. Two additional morning and two afternoon express trips will make limited stops. The express buses will only stop at the following locations:
• Downtown transfer center
• State & 17th
• State & 27th
• State & Veterans Memorial Parkway
• State & Collister
• Plantation Shopping Center (Big Lots)

The printed schedule  for Route 10 will change  to reflect a more accurate run time

Route and stops will remain the same.

Instead of 30 minutes all day, Route 14 Hyde Park will run its current route as follows:
 5:45 AM to 8:45 AM - 30 minutes
 8:45 AM to 2:45 PM - 60 minutes
 2:45 PM to 5:45 PM - 30 minutes

The last trip of the day at 6:45 PM will be discontinued due to low ridership.

Route and stops will remain the same.

Funding has been secured to provide two additional round trips on the most popular intercounty route. The additional  morning trip will depart Nampa at 6:45 AM and the additional afternoon trip will leave Boise State University at 4:47 PM.

Route and stops will remain the same.

Valley Regional Transit staff is working with the city of Meridian and employers to find a better routing through downtown Meridian that will provide more productive service.

Garden City

• Valley Regional Transit is working with Garden City and the City of Boise to  identify funding sources to operate service within Garden City. Until an  adequate funding solution can be found, bus service in Garden City is  not garanteed. The Route 10 Hill Road - Maple Grove will still serve the same stops along Glenwood St.

• Below are the options being considered currently. As we want this service to fit the needs of the people who use it, please give us your feedback on these route options:

Option A would be able to run this half-hour loop 12 times a day. For example, the bus could run once an hour from 6:00 AM to 6:30 PM.

For options B and C, there is enough funding to run six round trips  each weekday.

There could be three round trips during morning commute time and three round trips in the evening with no service  midday. Alternately, this route could also run six times midday.

Option B

Option C

Flex Bus Service

A “flex” area is one in which the bus could divert off route to pick up riders who call ahead. It is a good way to serve  areas where homes and businesses are not as concentrated.

The first area to be implemented is in southwest Boise. The type of flex service and specific coverage area/route is to be determined:
